GEKA TELECOM is the main system integrator in Africa for the softswitch THOMSON CIRPACK. With this collaboration, GEKA TELECOM and THOMSON CIRPACK have successfully deployed turnkey VoIP networks for WAT in Liberia, Communitec in Benin, Mediafon in Lithuania.

THOMSON CIRPACK Multinode-B is the platform for next-generation networks. It is a highly modular, scalable high-density platform, incorporating all the components of a powerful public telephony switch in a compact, standard-based and easy to manage shelf. Leveraging IBM’s expertise in designing superior IT systems, CIRPACK is accelerating its advance in next generation switches for carrier-class telephony.

Cirpack platform comprises two functional entities, a Media Gateway (MG) and a Media Gateway Controller (MGC).

The Media Gateway provides connections to local loops and core networks. It converts voice traffic and signaling from/to the appropriate protocols depending on the origin and the destination of the call (IP packets, ATM cells or TDM circuits).

The MGC or Softswitch manages call attempts (interpreting digits, managing call establishment and termination, generating billing records, delivering services such as Caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, etc.), instructs Gateways on how to reach destination devices and supervises ongoing calls to provide additional features while the connections are established. The Softswitch configuration determines whether the Cirpack platform will operate as local exchange node (Class-5), as transit node (Class-4), or both (local exchange node for some calls and transit node for others).

The MultiNode-B has demonstrated its scalability by easy upgrades of features and easy addition of capacity.

The MultiNode-B on the BladeCenter-T platform is designed on open standards which are not limited to telecommunications-specific applications. That enables the MultiNode-B to serve as the foundation for consolidating infrastructures and applications that deliver value-added telecom services to very large numbers of subscribers.

In order to guarantee the 99,999% availability ratio of the platform, the whole architecture has been designed to ensure a very strong level of high availability.

The CIRPACK HVS Softswitch (for High Velocity Softswitch) is based on a High Availability IBM servers cluster capable of handling up to 5 millions BHCA (Busy Hour Call Attempts) for transit applications (4 Cpus version).

The softswitch manages call attempts (interpreting digits, managing call establishment and termination, generating billing records, delivering services such as Caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, etc.), instructs Gateways on how to reach destination devices and supervises ongoing calls to provide additional features while the connections are established.

THOMSON NIS / CIRPACK proposes a scalable range of Media Gateway solutions, which allows extending hardware as you grow.

The Media Gateway (MG) provides connections to local loops and core networks. It converts voice traffic and signaling from/to the appropriate protocols depending on the origin and the destination of the call (IP packets, TDM circuits).
  • The entry-level solution adapted for remote sites is the RTG gateway with 8 E1 ports.
  • A second RTG model is also available with extended switching capacity and 16 E1 ports.
  • The PTG (Public Telephony Gateway) targets large switching capacity needs based on STM1 transport layer. It offers a cost effective model for switching capacities from 16 E1s to more than 100 E1s. It is based on blade Technology.

The RTP forwarder operates under the control of the Cirpack Softswitch (Signalling Proxy)  to provide a transit point for RTP media streams between User Agents. All media is directed to the RTP forwarder, ensuring that the Service Provider has full visibility and control of the media stream to ensure security, and for charging purposes.
Finally, the RTP forwarder (Media Proxy) performs dynamic NAPT and hides details of the network and other users from subscribers and other networks – helping to provide protection against Denial of Service attacks.
